Reflecting on 2025: Strategic Growth, Industry Shifts, and Priceless Family Moments

As the year draws to a close, I’m taking a moment to reflect on a pivotal 2025 for my architectural practice.

Business Resilience and Bespoke Service
I am immensely proud to close the second year of trading with strong and growing numbers. It’s worth noting that the statistic is stark—around 35% of UK small businesses unfortunately fail in their second year—so achieving this continued momentum and forecasting growth into Year 3 with JGJS architectural practice is a genuine professional milestone.
This year has been defined by partnering with significantly larger clients. It’s wonderful to see how these clients are actively moving away from the larger, more institutional architectural groups. They are seeking the bespoke, agile, and dedicated service that an independent practice can provide, and it validates the model we have worked so hard to build.

An Industry at a Crossroads
From an industry perspective, the headlines as we close 2025 are fascinating, particularly surrounding the regulatory debate. The news that RIBA President Chris Williamson is stepping away from his ARB registration is a powerful statement.
It highlights the growing need for regulation that goes beyond protecting the title 'Architect,' to one that truly focuses on competence and who is legally allowed to perform core 'reserved activities' in the built environment.
This discussion only strengthens my belief in the value of the committed, qualified, and accountable independent architect who puts quality and client trust first.
Balance and the Future
On a personal level, 2025 was about continuing to get that work-life balance right. With our eldest son heading off to university in just two years (and his brother following shortly after), making time for travel, family, and friends is truly priceless.

Looking ahead, 2026 is set to be another landmark year as I prepare to launch my new brand, James Spiteri - Your Architect, alongside the established JGJS Architecture practice.
More to follow in 2026—but for now, I wish everyone a peaceful and well-deserved holiday break!
